We had just gotten a load of spring stocker calves. They were all heifers, and these calves were all kept in our pasture at the ranch. One afternoon we noticed one heifer off in the tall grasses by herself. We were all a bit concerned so Doug, the kids and I went out to just keep an eye on her for a while. Not long after we started watching her we could tell she was giving birth! First the baby's little hooves emerged then the whole baby calf!! Everyone was so shocked because we hadn't had a bull or had any of the heifer calves AI'd. The little calf was black with a little white under her chin. We asked the girls what we should name the little baby calf and the girls unanimously said, "Tippy Toes". "Why Tippy Toes", we asked? They said, "Because her little toes come out first!" So, the first little calf born at Hilltop Ranch right at home was little Tippy Toes. And now Tippy has grown up and has become a great mother herself, right here at the ranch.
